This movie starts with 3 friends who are visting a friend in China or some Asian country. The friends rent a bike and somehow it is destroyed, well the friends return to the states and the one friend lives in this counrty is imprisoned and is placed on death row. He sends his sister to get the friends to come back and plead gulity so her brother can live.
I saw it on cable about a year or two ago.

It took me a while to remember but the movie is " Return to Paradise" 1998 with Anne Heche, Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix.
The story: Three friends (Sheriff, Tony, and Lewis) spend several weeks enjoying the splendors of Malaysia. Sheriff (Vince Vaughn) and Tony (David Conrad) leave to return home. Lewis (Joaquin Phoenix) remains behind and is arrested for possession of drugs... drugs that belonged to all three friends. Now Lewis faces the death penalty... unless his two buddies will return, take part of the blame, and serve 3-6 years in a 3rd world prison
