Back then it was done for reasons that were political or financial.
The European Royalty married each other to keep their power within the family and married each other off as signs of peace.
A lot of times, some locations were very remote (say Easter Island) and marrying someone outside your gene pool was not possible at the time, due to geographic reasons.

People seem to often think that different customs are strange or creepy. This is more notable in people who have little or no exposure to other cultures or history.
In other words, there are many customs around marriage and many other things that seem weird but have been in existence for quite awhile, and many people would look at your customs and find them strange.

I'm not really sure they had much of a choice. The social circles were much smaller back then.
