I have heard a few stories recently about individuals refusing to show their receipts to store employees and catching guff for it. Do any states require you to show a receipt? And do any other states require you to show ID upon request of a police officer?

Well, he is a gentle stab at this subject: A store is private property. The owner or tenant of private property has the right to place restrictions on the actions of individuals on the property. For example, I could require that people that visit my house only speak well of some person. If someone violated that rule I could lawfully ask them to leave. If they failed to do so I could have them arrested for trespassing. Hmmm, what about first amendment rights? Does not apply here. I'm not the government. The arrest is not for what was said, but for trespassing.

Most states have a law that requires a person to properly identify themselves to a law enforcement officer when asked. Every state is different on what exactly constitutes properly identify.
