Sabathia didn't beat Santana 5 times this year, but even if he did, that matters for NOTHING, because the Twins have the worst offense in baseball. It's not Johan's fault his team can't score runs, and the awards system shouldn't reflect that. Unfortunately it does. Since the question is who DESERVES to win, and not who WILL, I'll do my list that way.
There's no one stat that can determine the best pitcher. The best way to determine the best pitcher in the league with no regards to run support is to closely look at the stats that a pitcher can control for the most part. In the long run the flukey plays, opponent diffuculty, and streakiness will even out and the stats won't lie too much (Win/Loss is a terribly overrated stat.)
AL
1. Johan Santana - ERA 3.15, WHIP 1.06, IP 194, SO 203
2. Eric Bedard - ERA 3.16, WHIP 1.09, IP 182, SO 221
3. Dan Haren - ERA 2.87, WHIP 1.13, IP 191, SO 161
NL
1. Jake Peavy - ERA 2.10, WHIP 1.03, IP 185, SO 206
2. Brandon Webb - ERA 2.91, WHIP 1.17, IP 204, SO 204
3. John Smoltz - ERA 3.09, WHIP 1.23, IP 175, SO 159
Closers are overrated, and I won't consider them unless they pitch 150 innings in relief, and last time I checked, that's really hard to do.

Al Cy Young-CC Sabathia. He has 16 wins, on his way to 20, first Indians pitcher in 30 years to do that. He beat Johan Santana 5 times this year. Without his 16 wins, the Tribe is not in first place, not in the playoffs. He has been elite for years, it is time he got the trophy.

In the A.L., It will come down to C.C. Sabbathia or Eric Bedard. I want Bedard because he's the only thing keeping the Orioles from losing 100 games. And he's leading the league in Strike Outs and picthed great against the Yankees and Red Sox.
In the N.L., Jake Peavy because he is just awesome blowing people away with his 95+ fastball. Though, I would like to see John maine get some votes because he's kept the Mets on an even keel.

Brandon Webb will possibly win the NL Cy youthful. AL Cy youthful is going to be a conflict between Cliff Lee and ok-Rod. (observe that ok-Rod breaks the single season save checklist.) I do think of Cliff Lee merits it extra however.

doug, sabathia did not beat johan five times this year. but i do think that he should be the cy young winner for the al
nl its peavy
beckett is overrated, he may have the most wins but look at these rankings... (american league)
8th in era
9th in strikeouts
8th in whip
14th in h/9
a cy young winner should be around the top five in each of those catagories. there is only one of those pitchers in the league that are in the top five and that pitcher is johan santana and nobody is talking cy young about him

Wakefield has been amazing this year, he has 16 wins and until July had the least run support of any pitcher in the MLB. He is nasty and without him the Red Sox would have an average staff, but with him they have they have the best in the MLB.
