It is good to see that the propaganda machine is still working overtime.
The reason the terrorist organizations are successful is they want to remove the infidels, that's us, from their sacred land, that's Iraq. When the infidels, that's us, leave the sacred land, that is Iraq, they will have no reason to attack us.
Prior to our attack on Iraq most terrorist organizations were not well organized and relatively small. Since the attack they have become much more organized and have been recruiting in very large numbers.
Since no one has given us a definate definition of how we know we have won in Iraq one can only assume we are not winning. At what point do we finally say we have won? I have asked this question hundreds of time and no one offers any answer.
A draft will be necessary if we expect to increase our troops in Iraq or if we attack Iran. This whole Middle East thing has been a mess for 6 years and won't get better until after January of 2009.

You are probably right that without a draft we are going to have difficulty getting the troops needed to succeed militarily. On the other hand, you should recognize a draft would mean the end of the American involvement in Iraq, because opponents of the war (which is about 70% of the American people) will suddenly have a much more personal stake in the issue. Then we will start seeing the kinds of marches on Washington that we saw during Vietnam.
Personally, I feel that if we are going to commit to foreign adventures like Iraq, we should raise the taxes needed to pay for them, and we should also demand personal service by means of a draft. Only then will we make sure that such wars are supported by the people. The way that Bush got us into Iraq, on the other hand, was immoral and anti-democratic, by leading people to believe that we do not have to make personal sacrifices to conduct a war.

I figure most generals recognize the need for a draft. However, due to political necessity they do not freely voice such opinions. The Republicans know that the steady drum beat of Democratic negativity has made folks think we'll lose and if they instate a draft the dems will get the oval office. The dems know that the draft would ensure victory in Iraq so they stop it at all costs claiming to be protecting the poor and minorities.
Go figure...

The old draft didn't work during Vietnam and that's why were not using it now.
What we need is all citizens when they turn 18 or when they finish high school gets basic training then sent home as a member of the National Guard until they are 34.
That way people would become a lot more concerned about who their political representatives are and those that find they like military life can be the bulk of the professional soldiers.
Some side benefits is young adults could get some free fitness, first aid and self defense training,

Reinstating the draft is not a very popular notion right now. I think our government will try to wear-out all other options before even considering this. At this point, any serious mention of a draft will surely result in an out-right mutiny regardless if it's actually needed or not. Also, consider the fact that the next presidential election is right around the corner, so if any candidate wants so much of a speck of a chance for the white house, he/she better keep there mouth shut. At least until he/she is elected.

Just what we need. Another way to kill all the minorities quickly. Have a draft that all the elitist children can either skip off to Europe and pledge to defend the Mississippi coast instead going to die on foreign soil. And let me guess: You have gout so you yourself can't go right. Freakin genius.
Had we done the work in 2003 in Afghanistan instead of splitting our energies with a two front war to topple the only Secular leader in the region, we wouldn't be in this type of trouble.

We do not need the draft. Even if we draft the 500,000 soldiers like you say, that's just 500,000 privates. Where are we going to get the Sergeants and Officers from? Not to mention all the extra equipment that they will need. To say nothing of the new bases that will need to be build to house and train them.

Though more troops early on would have given the Iraq war a better chance of success, throwing hundreds of thousands of semi-trained conscripts in now would only increase the casualty rate, not to mention create widespread resentment among those who might be subject to the draft (and thier families).
That's why only anti-war types suggest using the draft, they hope that the fear engendered by the mere suggestion will further errode support for the war.

I suppose you have not signed up for the draft. better yet you should go and sacrifice your life for the cause. Show your conviction and passion to win. Be a hero. Maybe when you're captured and sent to a reeducation camp (like Vietnam) your president will abandon you the same as Reagan and Bush Sr., abandon the POW's before.

Yes, we DO need the draft, but not for the reasons put forth by you. We need the draft to get the country mobilized to END THIS STUPID WAR AND PREVENT THE NEXT ONE!!!! The main reason there were so many war protestors in the 60's is because they were being drafted! It affected every family in the country! Yes, we need a draft.
