Depends on the tropical fish. For most fish you are better off keeping the temperature at 76 degrees farenheight. Fish from the Amazon and some areas of Western Africa do better in the low 80s. Lake Tanganykan fish do best at 74, Lake Malawi 76 a little higher and Lake Victoria a little higher as well 76-78. When you get some of the beautiful South American cichlids from Uraguay they can handle the same temperatures we experience in Florida. Gymnogeophagus and Pike cichlids can handle night time temperature much lower though 74 would be a great summer temperature for them.

Huh? All these answers without knowing the type of fish? C'mon people. Yes, 75 is a good average, but for the fish to be at their best, you need the proper temperature range. Patrick gave the best answer, but these temps may not apply to your fish. White Cloud Mountain Minnows are usually considered, kept, and sold as tropicals, but actually do better in water cooler than 70 degrees. Betta do better at about 80.
So, to get a good answer, let us know what kind of fish!

For most, anywhere in the range of 76-83o is okay, although most can tolerate temperatures a little higher (if you're worried about higher temperatures from summer heat - this should only be a problem if the temperature changes quickly, or is over 90o).
Some species regularly like it on the high side (discus, angels). To find a range for a specific fish, see these links:

you are able to desire to examine the particular temperature standards of the tropical fish you prefer. some choose the mid 70s and a few could choose the low 80s. usually approximately seventy six-78F is the main difficulty-loose, yet something like rope fish or discus to illustrate could choose seventy 9-86F, and a few ought to choose seventy 4-75F.
