Yeast is a fungus. It naturally lives on your skin and in moist places like your vagina. The problem occurs when the balance of yeast and yeast fighting bacteria is interrupted and too much yeast starts to grow.

Sex, douching, poor hygiene, and taking antibiotics can all contribute to yeast infection as all of these things upset the pH of your vagina.

The first time you think you have a yeast infection you really should go to a doctor to make sure it is a yeast infection. Your doctor will tell you to get an over the counter yeast infection treatment.

A yeast infection causes itching and burning in and around the vaginal area and a lumpy discharge. You should not have sex while you have or are being treated for a yeast infection.

You get itchy, sore, red, raw, and you have a cottage cheese-like discharge. If you think you may have one (and this is your first), you should go to the doctor to make sure. They are easy to treat, you just want to make sure you are treating the right thing.
