So, my mom kind of freaked me out today... she was talking about pre-eclampsia (she had it in 3 out of 4 of her pregnancies) and she was giving me a run-down of how she felt when she had it.
Well, my feet are constantly swollen (and i know that some swelling is normal) and my hands sometimes get tight and I can't type or hold things, and last night I was having pains in my chest... (i figured from caffiene. i had an extra cup of coffee last night, maybe not the best idea).
Well, I was trying to look up the average blood pressure during pregnancy... i know everyone is different. at most of my dr's visits it has been 120/70, and last time it was only 120/60, and i don't really know how to gauge whether that's high or low or normal. i noticed on my chart they had written something was high, but i feel slightly embarrassed when i ask too many questions about my charts. so i didn't bother to inquire...
i guess my question is how do i know if my BP is high or low?
and i am 25.5 wks pg

Generally, preeclampsia occurs during the second half of pregnancy, so you're kinda right around that area, unfortunately. Preeclampsia does have the signs and symptoms that you listed (swollen feet, high protein in urine and such), but the blood pressure you said you had is right at the normal range. If you know your normal blood pressure, you can judge if that is a little high or not. Preeclampsia has a blood pressure much higher than that...up to about 150 systolic (the top number)...Pregnancy will cause a high blood pressure, but if you start getting above 130 or 135 systolic, then you really need to start worrying....and don't be embarrassed about your chart...especially if it involves the health of your unborn...

I had preeclampsia in my first. Your numbers are fine. 120/80 is about the highest you want to go, but even over that isn't necessarily bad. My average reading is 130/85 and while I am being watched for preeclampsia in this pregnancy (and scared of having it), getting stressed about your numbers is not going to help.
Don't be afraid to take control of your health - at each appointment you should ask your doctor a few things:
-What your bp numbers are and if they are high or normal
-How your urine sample was,- specifically if they found any traces of protein in it
Protein in your urine is another sign that can be more clarifying than swelling, because most pregnant women swell at some point, preeclamptic or not. There is no need to feel embarrassed. Taking responsibility for your health by asking questions only shows you want to take the best possible care of this baby that you can. Good luck!

Im also pregnant, and in my experience 120/60, or 70 is a great blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is 120/80, however mine has been as low as 110/60, and my doctor told me that was good. I wouldnt worry about it being too high or low. I truly dont believe if your doctor were concerned about it, he or she would have let you leave the office without further intervention. Please remember, never be afraid to ask questions of your doctor. That is what they are there for. Having them stay in the room an extra two minutes can save you hours of worry, and undue stress on your unborn baby. Good luck with everything!

Blood pressure may normally rise slightly during pregnancy or not at all. Your blood pressure should remain the same. It is important that you let your Dr. know your Mom had preeclampsia and about your swollen feet. Eat less salt. Elevate your feet, when you can. The blood pressures you have right now are excellent!

A heart rate over 100 is considered tachycardia and is not normal. You really need to see a doctor and have an ekg done! I had pregnancy-induced hypertension and it went away within days of delivery. If your blood pressure is still high after delivery, then you have chronic hypertension. It may need to be controlled with meds.

Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms to look for in preeclampsia..Blood pressure varies for everyone. If yours is averaging 120/70, then that is probably the norm for you and you should keep an eye on it, if it gets any higher. If you start to have any of the symptoms above, I would see your doctor. They will monitor your bp and may medicate you for it. If it is still high after about 38 wks, they may induce you. Good luck...

1] your mom told you all this because she didn't want you to
become dangerously ill while you were pregnant.
2] the CHANGE in blood pressure is the sign of pre-eclampsia, not how high the numbers are.
3] other signs - swelling, upper abdominal pain, headache,
visual changes. The rest of the symptoms can be found by
the doc/midwife, and by blood tests.
4] call the office, and go in to be checked, NOW.
