Here's the deal.
It's of course not 100% safe.
BUT, The truth is that if you know how long your cycle lasts you can usually figure it out.
If your cycle last the usual 28 days then you ovulate 14 days after the FIRST day of your last period.
If you'r cycle is 30 days, then you ovulate 15 days after the FIRST day of you last period.
Make sure you count from the FIRST day of your period NOT your last, you'll get it all messed up.
So, around the time you know you will be ovulating avoid sex.
The truth is you can only get pregnant one day a month, but the tricky part is that no one knows what day that is.
Just be safe, use a condom.

The only way this would be safe without protection is if you know 100% exactly when you ovulate. I was lucky in that my ovulation happened basically on time every month, as did my period. However, if you are not sure, there is a good chance of pregnancy. Be safe, unless you want a baby and/or an STD.

No time is safe to have intercourse if you are trying to avoid pregnancy.
The best way to avoid pregnancy is to use some forms, yes, forms, of contraception. Condoms, diaphragm, IUD, Birth Control Pill, Depo Shot, Abstain, Sterilization, something.
It is always best to double up on contraception, as in, your partner uses one form, and you use another. Example: Condom and Depo Shot.

it all depends on your ovaltion time.
some girl ovalate before their period,
and some afterwards.
i dont think its ever safe to have sex
anywhere around your period,
just to be safe.
you could always use protection,
but if that isnt an option,
i'd suggest dont have intercourse
anywhere around your period

Sure, if you use birth control.
The rhythm method is not foolproof. Don't use it if you don't want a babe.
