Back when I started teaching, there were ten or twelve books available for each of the courses I taught, and I could choose the best ones for my students. Now, with all of the mergers and acquisitions in the field, there are often only two or three choices. If I don't like any of the ones available, it is just too bad. Do I think that competition in the texbook market is inappropriate? Absolutely not!

There IS competition in the textbook market. And it is very appropriate.
