The system is a joke isn't it?
My wife and I both work full time jobs. After we have paid income tax, rent, council tax, travel costs (petrol tax) we are left with just about half our wages, we have not had a proper holiday since 2003, we very rarely go out to the pub or for a meal simply because a lot of the time there isn't any money left over after the bills are paid.
The single mums who live on the same estate have all their rents paid, council tax paid for by us taxpayers. They choose to be unmarried and have kids by different fathers just for extra benefits. They always seem to have money for trips to the pub, sky tv, mobile phones etc.
At least we can hold our heads up high because that little bit of money we have left is OURS..we EARNT it and didn't sponge it.
Makes me very annoyed sometimes.

It's not discrimination at all.
Your daughters are working hard at University and living in "bed-sit squalor" for now. But once they qualify the world is their oyster. If anyone wants to better themself they must suffer to get there. It's not discrimination it's called life.
As for the scroungers living in the free accommodation on benefits. Well they will be doing that for the rest of their lives. And, I bet if you went into any of these houses, no matter how modern on the outsides, the occupants will have turned the insides into disgusting pigsties, even in comparison to the "London squalor" of your daughters..

Yes it is discrimination - but what's going to stop it. Someone should try for a "test case" against councils and see what happens. A few years ago I wanted to move beside my mother and sister as mum was ill and I wanted to help care for her. I was told I didn't have enough local points for a flat never mind a back and front door. I told the guy that I'd lived and worked in the area all my life and that single mums - teens at that - were getting this type of house no bother. He said it was because they had kids. I told him that I was being discriminated against because I didn't have children and THAT wasn't by choice. Rules were rules I was told and there was nothing HE could do about it. It's sad, isn't it?

Not not discrimination, just the way society provides for the destitute.
You advice is sound, your daughters will achieve their A levels, obtain an excellent education which will provide them with the opportunity to pursue a career and thereby earn money which will afford them a future.
Those living on the dole with children have at least 18 years of 'existence' to look forward to, living in an area with the same level of intelligence and squalor. That is their lot unless they persue an education - very difficult with kiddies.

It's a lousy system in lots of way but always remember, your girls can hold their heads up high and have pride in their achievements. I think it's unfair to lump all the people on benefit together, you never know when it might be your turn. I always looked down on people that didn't work until both my husband and I, after over 40 years working, had to go on income support for nearly two years. Not so great when you are living (or existing) on that level.

No not in this country run by do gooders and liberals.
What you must remember is that your children are obviously been brought up in a good loving home and are responsible people. They are therefore on their own sink or swim.
On the other hand if they are from a scum family they are automatically classed as victims of society. Every action they perform is not their responsibility it's down to the wicked society that produced them. Unfortunately it then follows that society has to look after the scum for the rest of their lives.
I am of course a bleeding heart liberal.

Or they could choose to work, study and live somewhere cheaper. I don't think many single mums decide to move to London when they find themselves alone. Your daughters had the facts when they made their choice. And by the way - we all pay income tax.

Are they citizens of the USA? If so, that does not give them the same privileges as a citizen of Britain. The same would be true if someone from London came to study in the good ole USA.
But it would not hurt to find the correct officers to talk to about this problem. How about talking to a British attorney.

That is a terrible thing that they have to spend so much money just to live. Sadly, regardless of where we live, taxes are high and we are forever paying for those who won't work or take care of themselves...
