If you want a pop-up blocker you can install either yahoo toolbar or goggle toolbar. Both work fine and are simple to use. You should be using one, but all depends on what types of sites you visit. Some sites have more popups than others. I also use AVG works great. Keep it updated.

AVG is good. You might want to add the AVG anti-spyware too. If you are looking for a BETTER Pop-up blocker you could try a free trial of SuperAdBlocker. That will block as much or as little as you like. Go to superadblocker.com to find out more. You can get it bundled with SuperAntiSpyware. There is a free version of SAS you can keep if you do not want to pay for it after the trial. You can never have too much protection. Yes, a pop-up blocker should be considered necessary. You should have only 1 firewall, 1 anti-virus, and as many anti-spys as you like, and definately a pop-up blocker.
Oh, and be careful about rogue anti-spyware, it is a scam and can hurt your computer. Make sure you get something that other people recommend or that you read a review of it. Do not ever download anything from a pop-up advertisement.

Internet explorer comes with a pop-up blocker and it is on by default. If you want another one you can download the google toolbar. It has a pop-up blocker in it as well. You can search google for google toolbar and you'll find the download.

I would recommend using Google toolbar if you are using Firefox browser, and built-in Popup blocker if you are using IE 7.

AVG? Pshh. I would just get avast! and be over with it, along with google toolbar for obvious reasons. avast! does a lot better, but I recommend that you pirate it somewhere.
