Your doctor knows more than your friends. Lots of doctors wait until the 20th week for the first scan.

Different areas have different policies on when the first scan is.
Sounds like in your area you will have blood tests at around 15-16 weeks, which might also involve a dating scan. This is instead of a 12 week scan and tests for the same things. You will then have an anomoly scan at around 18-20 weeks.

I live in Scotland and I'm 7 weeks pregnant. Doc told me to book appt with midwife at 10 weeks and she will book scan for 12 weeks, then you get another one at 16 weeks. With my first baby, I only got scan at 16 weeks. They have only introduced the 12 week one recently

It may have been 12 weeks when your friend was pregnant, but they change it from year to year. See what your midwife says as they don't normally do any tests until after 12 weeks, find out when they do the tests for Downs etc, as this I thought was done at 16 weeks, but then again it could have all changed again.

Each doctor has their own preferences. I had a scan around 12 weeks ONLY because my doctor wanted to confirm my estimated due date. Typically, they do not scan until 18 to 20 weeks.

I had a scan at 12 weeks, but it was because I opted to do the first trimester screening. If you do not want to do any of the screening for downs, spine abifita (spelling?), etc. If you don't want to do these things and your Dr. thinks it is best, I don't see why waiting would be a bad idea.

good luck!

I had two scans, one at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks, i thought this was common practice for every normal pregnancy

when i was pregnant...a year ago...i had an internal ultrasound done around 10 wks and then the ultrasound where they run the thing over your tummy around 20 wks.

i'm in the US, though, so i don't know if they follow the same time frame here as you do there.

the best advice i can give you is this......

ALWAYS ask your dr ANY questions you may have. it's your body and your baby and right now, you're the only one who can stick up for your kid.

so aways ask....you'll get used to it!

I'm pregnant myself, I'm scheduled for an ultrasound at 22 weeks. But I quess it all depends on your doctor or mid-wife. If you are really worried call the office and check. It will probably make you feel better and ease your fears.
