You have to get the 64-bit operating system version to get your computer to run at 64-bit. XP Professional comes in a 64-bit version but it's not supported by most peripheral manufacturers so finding drivers is a challenge. XP Home doesn't come in a 64-bit version. Vista comes in a 64-bit version and will be supported better than XP Pro's version but still isn't that great yet.
