Maybe I don't understand what is meant by "the past".

Yankee fans always talk about their 26 rings, but how ridiculous would Red Sox fans look if they talked about their 6, considering 5 of those happened in the early 1900's?

As a Red Sox fan I think both groups should shut up about past championships and focus on winning more in the future.

The interesting thing about Yankees fans is that they only dwell in the past. I'm speaking for all the Redsox fans I know when I say that there completely sick of hearing "WE have 26 rings, we're better than you. You only have 6. Yankees are better."

I don't understand how saying we were better far in the past is a reason to brag about your team. I've taken crap from people recently about Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone, etc. HELLO! do any yankees fans know what happened in 2004? And they still won't shut their ******* trap. Last time I checked, the Bosox won the World Series in 2004, and the Yankees haven't since '00 when they had Paul O'Neill, David Justice, Scott Brosious, Chuck Knoblach, etc.

So yea, 2004 is considered the past. I can see why you would get frustrated. That's 3 years ago though. Only 3 years ago. We only bring that up when the Yankee fans say the popular line "26 rings". Almost any argument you will witness between a redsox and yankee fan will include the yankee fan saying we have 26 rings la la la la la. Well guess what, we DON'T care. Between the 2 teams, we won the most recent title and our standings NOW are better.

Can I also add that the Boston Celtics have 16 rings- the most in NBA history, and not one Celtics fan ever claims they are the greatest because they have 16 rings. Just something to think about.

It's just spin-doctoring, trying to frame the discussion (shoutfest, whatever) to shine best light upon the preferred team.

Much like how some Yankees fans like to point out how their team has the most championships in baseball since 1920. True, but why that cutoff? It serves the pro-Yankist agenda.

We could just as easily assign a cutoff date which captures this century while removing the previous -- 2001, obviously.

And since 2001, we find that the Red Sox are 1-0 in the World Series, while the Yankees are 0-2.

Which is cute, but supports nothing other than the last six seasons of baseball, and carries no weight whatsoever in 2007.

I totally agree with you. Why the ell should we do that when you always are talking about you are the best. And pesonally, not all yankee fans live in the past. Sure, there is a lot , I think about the future like A Rod and where we need to improve in. But really, if your a sox fan, dont ever tell us to not live in the past if you talk about 2004, you cant win both ways people!!

When you figure when the last time the Yankees won the World Series and the last time the Sox won it, I guess that's their trump card.

I can just see a Sox fan going up to a Yankees fan saying, "We won it in '04 and youuuuuu didn't!!"

I guess anything before 2004 is ancient history to a Bosox fan.

And 2004 is just like yesterday.

Perhaps because the rest of us are tired of hearing all the Yankee braggarts.

They may keep bringing up the '04 World Series but their percentage this year at .601 and 83 wins is nothing to laugh at.

When they mean "the past," they mean all of the following:
2003-Aaron Boone's walk-off in Game 7 ALCS
1978-Bucky Dent's homer to clinch the AL East.
1920-Babe Ruth goes to the Yankees and helps them win a ton of championships.

Sorry but the biggest choke in sports history will not be going away anytime soon. Give it another 50 years before people forget that 3-0 choke.
