I'm laying sod this weekend, are soak hoses (porous underground hoses) a good idea vs watering on the surface? I'm looking for a cheap alternative to putting in a sprinkler system, I'm not going to be on this property much longer so I'm not looking to spend a fortune. Thanks!

I think a sprinkler would be less expensive than the hoses. Just make sure to cover all of the lawn, even if you have to move it around. You can also hand-water with a water hose, again, making sure to soak all of the sod.
Underground hoses? Soaker hoses (I thought) were supposed to be on top of the ground? I have never heard of that. People use those for their lawns sometimes, but they lay them on the grass. You still have to move those around to insure that the water is reaching the entire lawn.
To establish the sod, water daily for at least a week...then water every other day...until the grass has taken root into the ground. (A nice yard will help sell a home faster...it's the 1st thing people see when they come to buy.)

A sprinkler with your garden hose is perfectly fine, however you must make sure you do 2 things:

A) water some everyday because once sod dies it will not regenerate

B) Move the sprinkler around to get everywhere.

A soaker hose is used for landscaped flowers , shrubs and trees in permanent landscape beds.

If you aren't going to there much longer, just pick up some decent sprinklers and move them as necessary. Soakers aren't going to give you the area coverage that a sprinkler can be set for and really is more geared to your gardens.

Soakers don't have a very good record for even watering, and in a hard water area, clog fairly readily.

I'd probably put out a few impact sprinklers on stakes.
