I personally like the Joker due to sheer scariness but I don't collect alot of other comics outside of the mainstream of DC and Marvel.

Since you mentioned being in the mainstream with DC and Marvel, this one's easy. ^_^

DC--Tie! The Joker would normally win hands down, since he gets results, and they tend to be both terrifying and fairly permanent (Barbara Gordon *still* can't walk, hello?), but...

Sinestro. He may be the most underrated villain that DC has, and he's finally getting the push he deserves. He's Hitler with a damn power ring folks. Really. Not that he needs an army, mind you, but yeah, these days, he *also* has an army at his back.....

Marvel--Magneto. Duh.

Simply put, nobody else *in comics, ever*, has a *better reason* to hate people and to want to destroy humanity than this guy. You can't really fault the guy because he *has* the moral reason for wanting to do what he does....and yet.

You *can* fault the guy as well because whenever he *does* get a good solid shot at winning, what does he do? He acts *exactly* like the kind of dictator that ended up giving the orders to kill off his family.

Combine that with some immense and *realistic* powers and yep. Best Marvel villain, hell, one of the best fictional villains ever.

--*If* you should ever show any interest in Indie comics....

Look into the Image Comic _Invincible_, particularly the trade paperbacks collecting the early issues. The lead character's father does a very *novel* take on the whole villain thing (flipping a large chunk of your Superman-type mythos on its ear in the process).

Look into the early issues of _Grendel_, which should be reprinted in collected form these days. The Hunter Rose and Christina Spar stories had *excellent* adversaries.

And more recently? If you're old enough, check out _The Boys_. Yes, it's a mature-content comic, and yes, DC/Vertigo dropped it like a hot potato six issues in, and Dynamite picked it up....but. I've heard nothing but good things about this one, which is weird when you consider the perspecitve: that the so-called "Superheroes" are actually the out-of-control jerks and bad guys.

I hope this helps....thanks for your time! ^_^

I'll agree with you about the Joker - the mental instability is the wildcard - you never know what he'll do and he might just do it and more just for the fun of it.

Lex Luthor is another to consider - just corrupt enough and egotistical enough to try stuff others wouldn't

Ozymondius - in Watchmen is dangerous because he believes that the ends justify the means.

On the Marvel side, perhaps Galactus, Magneto or Dr Doom.

That's a very brief list - the discussion could go even further if you consider that many heros let these villains live and then they end up killing again and again (which is more villainous). Are 'all-powerful' villains scarier than the 'maniacal human' types?

As for other comics (than DC or Marvel) there have been many a decent villain - from the Bizarre (Artful Dodger of Flaming Carrot Comics) to the mundane (any of the various petty criminals).

You ar 100% correct. The Joker, when written correctly, is the best. He's crazy and evil to the point where in Villains United, everyone was requited by Alexander Luther except for The Joker. The Joker was pissed that he wasn't invited so killed the Royal Flush Gang except the King who he asked why he wasn't included. The King said "because everyone knows the Joker is too wild". The Joker shot him dead and said "that's not funny." The Joker later killed Alexander Luther after the Infinite Crisis was over.

I agree with on the Joker for the best DC villain. However, I have to say that Mr. Sinister is the best villain of the Marvel World, because of the fact that he can be sane one minute and insane the next minute with a evil plan for conquest. However, my personal favorite marvel villain is Carnage, due to the fact that character was based off of Batman archenemy, himself.

MAGNETO
He did start off good and such, but what he wanted ruined the lives of others, including his kids. His daughter and son (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch) blame him for ruining their lives and being associated with him, and when Magneto killed his own son (revived by Scarlet Witch) she got mad and said the notorious three words, "No more mutants!" So, in some way, magneto is responsible fo the mass depowering of 90% of the mutant population. He has also nearly killed Wolverine by ripping the adamantium off his bones (X-men #25: volume 2) and when Xavier mindwiped him, the dark side of both spawned onslaught. Magneto has nearly killed the X-men and has even crucified Xavier during the Eve of Destruction storyline. He was their first enemy and resorted to many acts which could have been resolved another way. He was also the first enemy, and threatened to turn the earth upside down. He even killed Jean Grey, though many did not believe that, Xavier called him by his real name, Erik before he killed Jean (as Xorn; was revived by scarlet witch off panel after being beheaded). He attempted to turn the globe upside down, he wanted world domination, he killed an x-man, he ruined his childrens lives by putting his beliefs above his priorities of raising them right, and he even crucified his former best friend. Though he is going good, I still say he's the classic villain.

The Joker from the Batman comics is the best villain. He knows how to push the protagonist's buttons and get under his skin.
