I think many of them still root for Sharipova. She still represents them in a symbolic way.

I would say that Kafelnikov, Safin, and Kournikova were and still are stars in Russia; however, I'm not really sure that Sharapova is that unpopular since Serbs generally like her and the first answerer said that Serbia and Russia are the same :-) (wrong, of course!). I wouldn't say that Davydenko and Chakvetadze are popular in Russia at all. Davydenko is originally from Ukraine and Russians do not like him because it is well known that he tried to get first Austrian and then German citizenship and promised that he would play the Davis cup for them (it is funny that he was rejected!). Chakvetadze has Georgian origins. Kuznetsova is more Spanish than Russian :-)

Sharapova is far and away the most popular tennis player in Russia. She's constantly commercials, she's modeled for Sports Illustrated, everyone in the world knows who she is. Not everyone would know who Youzhny, Kuznetsova, and Davydenko.
