Oakland is a very beautiful diverse urban city. Oakland has some the best weather of any city in America. Oakland has a rich Asian, African-American, Hispanic, Anglo culture. The city does have a problem with crime, urban decay and the same ills that most aging urban centers suffer from. The city is going through a boom in construction and revitalization of it urban core.

Oakland is no different then any other big City. People get shot in San Francisco and Los Angeles too. Like any where else it has nice neighbor hoods, Rockridge. Lake Merritt Oakland Hills Adams Point Broadway Terrace and temescal and bad neighborhoods, most of west and east Oakland. It has a nice climate year round with very little rain and is home to the A's, Raiders and Warriors. Jack London Sq. waterfront has nice restaurants, try Kincaid's. Oakland and Alameda County has some of the worst politicians anywhere in the US and you don't want to get in trouble there. Oakland should have been another Atlanta only prettier with its hills and bay views but I think it was dealt a bad hand due to politics and racism.

No, dont pass there without understanding the neighborhoods. in case you seem on the map, you spot you should pass a fave bridge from Oakland to S.F. there's a commuter gentle rail. you may stay in Emeryville close to the BART station or some factors of Berkeley, or Albany or El Cerrito.

All I know is they have an airport and people get shot a lot and there's a lot of crime. I hate to say I can't really say anything good about Oakland other than it's a bit cheaper than SF, has a cheaper airport, and uh, that's it.
