Wait until fall, then trim away branches that cross or point to the middle of the tree. This will allow air and sunlight to penetrate the entire tree--as well as giving it form. I have 4 Japanese maples.
According to experts major pruning should be done during the dormant season after the leaves have fallen, from late November to early January, well before the sap starts rising prior to leaf production in the spring. i like jap Maples, too. they have such lacy, mushy leaves. definite, you may prune it. Spring is the terrific time, fall is the 2d terrific, and dormant wintry climate pruning is my third determination. Get a e book on pruning so which you do it precise, reducing any crossing branches. Selectively prune branches all a thank you to the main branch as a manner to enable greater gentle in and make a greater healthy tree.

Recommended Monitoring of Japanese Maple:

Timing Treatment
Winter Corrective prune to remove dead, dying diseased limbs and interfering
limbs. Shape crown as desired to achieve landscape goals. Inspect root
collar and take soil sample. Inspect for scale, cankers and twig borers,
treat if needed.

Mid spring Anthracnose and leaf spot suppression treatment if needed.

Late spring Monitor leaf feeding and scale insects. Repeat soil

Early summer Monitor leaf feeding and scale insects. Repeat leaf disease

Summer Monitor soil moisture, especially on newly planted trees.

Fall Fertilize as needed. Apply soil insecticide to reduce sucking insects
next year.

maple should be pruned when the sap is not running, so that's about mid July, when it's in full leaf..... at this point, I'd not prune until next year... unless it's more dead wood.... mine were hurt badly by this spring's late freeze and I' have all manner of stuff to prune, but I'll not do mine until next June/July.....they do maple syruping in winter, remember?....
