We each have to find our own calling. When you find your calling, then you will be happy to work at it in a diligent and serious manner. You have to find what you want to work for. It can be a collection of jobs, from taking care of your family to getting employed with a company whose values you agree with.

You said, "greeks suspected it is devine design that man may not be more powerful than the creator." I don't believe that. A creator can make something superior. For example, mankind has made calculators that can add large numbers faster than any human. Additionally, students are often end up wiser than their teachers.

I'm thinking about the power of some works of art such as Michelangelo's 'David' or Leonardo's 'Mona Lisa'. I'm sure the creators were involved in a -serious- way with their efforts.
When I am engaged in something that interests me, like a painting or a wood project, I am very serious. But, I am also feeling very good.... happy.
Some things, though, require us to be serious, that are not necessarily enjoyable. We may do them to achieve a goal that we believe will, ultimately, bring us closer to happiness.
Any other thoughts?
