Take the rapid from the airport to Tower City, then you can either walk to Chester & 12th street or catch a bus to the Greyhound station. (Not to many buses run down Chester). I do know that LAKE FRONT TRAILWAYS travels from Cleveland to Buffalo with a stop in Erie.
If you choose to take the rapid and then a bus to the Greyhound station, get an all day pass for $3.50. Also please keep in mind that downtown Cleveland is under construction, so some roads may closed off to pedestrians.

This will also work well, if the timing happens to be right for you: Take the RTA train from Cleveland Airport to Tower City (the "Grand Central" terminal of Cleveland).
I think it is six blocks from Tower City to the Amtrak station: Walk out the front of Tower City, Walk two blocks north (toward Lake Erie) on Ontario, take a right and walk three blocks east, and then take a left on East 9th street and walk another block north and you'll should be able to see the Amtrak train station (and Browns Stadium and the Rock Hall and the Great Lakes Science Center just ahead of you).
Then take the Lake Shore Limited train directly from Cleveland to Erie. It takes an hour and a half, direct. It is $19 one way, less with a Student, Senior, or AAA discount. Sounds perfect, right? Trains are nicer than buses.
The problem is that the Lake Shore Limited only runs from Cleveland to Erie once every day, and right now it scheduled for 7 a.m. The train has been running all night, since it left Chicago the night before, so sometimes it runs late - the Plain Dealer says call the station for an estimate of when the train will leave Cleveland. The timing of this schedule may change in the fall.

Why not try to schedule a flight into Erie? The airport is much smaller and easier to deal with. If you have to fly into Cleveland, try to get someone from Erie to come and pick you up-it's not that far, about an hour and a half.Greyhound will take you there, but what a mind hassle.
