According to WebMD "Fertilization: If sperm does meet and penetrate a mature egg after ovulation, it will fertilize it. When the sperm penetrates the egg, changes occur in the protein coating around it to prevent other sperm from entering. At the moment of fertilization, your baby's genetic make-up is complete, including its sex. Since the mother can provide only X chromosomes (she's XX), if a Y sperm fertilizes the egg, your baby will be a boy (XY); if an X sperm fertilizes the egg, your baby will be a girl (XX). " so doesn't that mean you are pregnant at fertilization?

Actually No.

Fertilization takes place usually within the fallopian tube where a pregnancy could be fatal to both mother and child. The fertilized egg still has to journey downward and into the uterus, where, if the conditions are just right, it will embed into the uterine lining.....implantation.

Until this point, it can still be lost as unviable and therefore it cannot be assumed that the pregnancy has effectively begun until implantation.

Also, thanks to modern technology, the fetus can begin life in a test tube....but surely it cannot be suggested that the woman is pregnant until the egg is implanted into her uterus and her uterus has accepted it?

Because many times eggs are fertilized but do not implant. You can't have a child if the egg is released from your body. The egg cannot grow without implantation, and your body doesn't start acting pregnant until the egg implants, so you won't test positive, either.

The fertilized egg has to implant into the lining of the uterus for it to grow and mature. If that doesn't happen then there is no pregnancy.

Not really b/c if it doesnt implant it will just expell out of your body during your period...therefore it was never a pregnancy...once it implants it has chance at life therefore for being a true pregnancy.....

No, because the ovum could STILL die prior to implantation, or it could be expelled at implantation....especially if fertilization should occur during menstruation.
