Honshu is the biggest and that's where all the major cities are located, e.g. Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, etc.

Honshu.
Hokkaido has had very little historical importance until around the Meiji period when Japan had to stake its claims to ward off Imperial Russia's push into the far east.

the japanese are chiefly a nation of city dwellers. cities are scattered throughout the islands, although most of the largest are on honshu. eleven japanese cities have populations of 1,000,000 or more, and several others are approaching this figure.
tokyo (11,574,000), yokohama (3,301,000), osaka (8,607,000), kyoto (2,555,000), nagoya (2,085,000), kobe (1,441,000).... etc.
