It is due to the tilt of the earth's axis.Because of the tilt, there is an apparent movement of the the sun between the tropic of cancer in the Northern Henisphere and tropic of capricon in the southern Hemisphere.Further the Northern hemisphere is exposed fully to the sun on 21st June, causing summer season in the Northern Hemisphere and winter season in the southern Hemisphere. On 22nd December,The Southern Hemisphere is exposed to the sun causing summer there and winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
If the axis of earth does not have a tilt as it is now and if it were to be perpendicular to the plane of revolution of the earth around the sun,the day time and night time will be equal in all the places throughout the year.In that case the sun rise time and sun set time will also be the same thoughout the year in all places of the earth.

The earth is not vertically parallel to the sun, our axis is tilted about 23° 26’. As the earth moves in it's orbit around the sun, it appears to tilt vertically, causing the sun peak height above the horizon to change. See the Wiki article, it is well illustrated and shows the two "tropics" that mark the two seasonal peaks for the sun. One oddity is that we in the northern hemisphere are tilted away from the sun when we have our longest day, on the Summer Solstice, around June 21st.
