Malaysia is a vast country extended from the north connecting Thailand to the south Borneo connecting Indonesia and Philippines. There are different provinces. People in different regions are different.
If you have more time, suggest you to go to explore other areas, especially the islands, forest and suburbs.
People there are generally very nice.

1/ islands on the east coast

These are the 2 islands on the east coast I love most. You can see schools of giant bumphead parrot fishes and squids in the sea. Last time when I snorkelled, I swam with a tortoise

2/ Taman Negara National Park

It is beautiful. You can stay inside the forest for a few nites

3/ Bornea
It is a big island. Stay in town Kota Kinabalu http://www.kotakinabalu.com/cmarter.asp?doc=367 to mingle with people and see. But be careful. Last time, my friend lost her wallet there and another friend got his credit card stolen
You may join local tour to trek to Moutain Kota Kinabalu

It is the first Malaysia's world heritage
You may want to go south to Tawau, then head to Sipadan or Mabul if you want crystal blue sea and skin-kissing sun.

4/ Ipoh
It is the 3rd largest town in the north west. Very strong colonial heritage from British sovereign. A lot of Chinese. Don't miss the tasty Ipoh chicken with bean sprouts and sesame oil

5/ Penang
It is the second largest town further north of Ipoh. Good fruits, food, beaches... a lot to see.

Malaysia is so big that you may split into several trips to understand the people and the places better.

If you're just going around KL, you can visit Batu Caves, it is a Hindu temple just in the outskirt of KL. Also, the Istana Negara, where the present King and Queen of Malaysia lives.
Lake Garden is also worth a visit, as well as the Zoo Negara. Currently Eye of Malaysia is located in Titiwangsa Lake. KL tower and the Petronas Twin Tower is also a must visit.
There are lots of shopping mall around KL if you like shopping.
Just out of KL is the beautiful Putrajaya mosque. Try not to go during Friday, it's very busy then.
Genting Highland is the Las Vegas of Malaysia. Lots of thing to do there. Great for family fun without the pimps and prostitutes that you usually see in a Casino area.
Another place that is worth a visit inspite of it being too commercialized is Penang. It's a great place to be, especially in tasting the best of Malaysian cuisine.
There's lot of places to go for beaches, and all, like Langkawi, Perhentian, Redang, Tioman, Sipadan and a lot more.
Don't forget to visit Malacca. It's a historical place here in Malaysia
I've been here for more than 12 years and I'm not done exploring yet. Oh yeah, Taman Negara is the next on my list. It's a reserve rainforest.
Malaysian are generally friendly so you won;t have much of a problem here.
