#1 because they paid taxes for it.
#2 there are a lot of people who just can't make it with out some assistance even working 4 jobs.
#3 Some people can't get 3 jobs or even one either because they are unskilled or the job market is bad.
#4 There are many folks out there who are not "failures" but are going through a rough patch. Accepting some assistance can help them get through it so they can get back on their feet again.
#5 What about single parents, mentally challenged, physically handicapped, mentally ill, or chronically ill people.
Obviously there are some people who take advantage of the system who don't need it but most people on it do. It also just helps sometimes to know that there is that safety net just in case things get worse before they get better.
Try a little compassion

Sway-it would simply depend on the circumstances. I've never even been on unemployment, but if I was an abandoned mother or a child, there's no reason to feel embarrassed if life has dealt you a tough hand. Many, many children are on medicaid so your question should only be aimed at adults. Realistically, social security (which we earn) is partly a government subsidy since our employer contributes. Medicaid for the elderly and medicare are 2 other examples. You're painting with too broad a brush and I've seen your other questions and I don't think you are that kind of person nor do you mean to do so. I'd be tempted to narrow my question if I were you. We also pay into unemployment, so that's nothing to be ashamed of--ask the steel and auto workers. EDIT: Sway-I know your questions and answers are private, but I've answered some of your other questions. In fact, you have one in voting now. You should go back and pick a best answer.

It's actually a belief system. Some people believe that the purpose of government is to care for the people. Others believe that government should have little involvement in people's lives.
To the one who believes that the purpose of government's existence is to provide for people, they see no problem whatsoever with partaking in services.
To the one who beleives that the purpose of government should be much more limited in nature, they can tend to want to avoid participating in government programs.
During my times of unemployment, I have had no problem taking unemployment checks because I have actually been paying unemployment insurance premium to the state government for years. personally, I would have rather had the cash up front and not participated in the program--but since I (forcibly) did, I chose to participate in its benefit.
During that time, I was not doing "nothing" as you say, but was feverishly looking for work. Had I taken just any old job, I would not have been free to pursue my career.
Just a few thoughts.

I understand that there are many people that do take advantage of this but what about the others. What about the single mom who already works two jobs and has a kid?
What about the person who really is disabled and can only do so much work? If it were just myself, no kids and I were completely healthy, I would do everything I could but some people just do not have that option. The only reason they can survive is because of this assistance.

I used to be on housing assistence......you assume that people get a job just because they apply for one. I have been searching for a 2nd job/better job for 5 years - constantly filling out applications. I have had no calls or interviews in 3 years.
I am currently getting assistence from the state/county government because my daughter has a disorder and I and my wife cannot afford the proper care that she needs.
Honestly, I dont mean to offend you, but I think you ask/word your question the way you do out of ignorance of what other people are actually going through....

Well Sway; I'm very glad you've never experienced being in a situation where you had no other choice than to ask for HELP!!! You should get on your knees and thank almighty GOD, for being there and seeing you through the "HARD-TIMES"....................................
I was 40years old, had worked ALL my life since before I was old enough to pay taxes. I too, thought as YOU do!!
I made jokes about people with "BAD BACKS" and people on "WELFARE"........the whole "ball of wax!!"
I was in a work-related accident, and instead of letting them take me to the hospital. It was Fri. long-weekend had boat hooked to the truck." "I WAS NOT GOING TO THE HOSPITAL" Long story short, because I tried to make it and dragged myself around for a month or more.
I ended-up outta work, kids in H/S, no money & no way to earn any!!!!!! See, I was divorced, and had never made her give me "child support"........and believe me I NEVER wanted to get "FOOD STAMPS" or even the refused the FREE lunches.........If it hadn't been for my "FAR ABOVE AVERAGE" work record I would be living on "SKID ROW" OR "BLOWN MY HEAD-OFF!!" no I'm not able to do the things I see other D/A'ed people do, but I must think what is it that I may NOT know!! "JUDGE NOT LEST YE BE JUDGED!!" I would love nothing better than to go to work and feel like a real "HUMAN BEING" again!!
THEN I HEAR ,"OOH YOU GOT IT MADE!!" Want to trade? I will in a heart beat!!! Just think I've not even scratched the surface!!...Soo much more I could tell but WTF who would care anyway!! "WAKE UP AMERICA!!"
i WOULD NOT WISH WHAT I GO THROUGH ON MY WORST ENEMY. I'LL ALSO PRAY THAT YOU NEVER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE ANYTHING LIKE THIS "FIRST-HAND" Peace and Love to All!! Sign Me "STUCK" here in the real world....I too once lived the "GOODLIFE"

Well this is an easy question to answer.
Those who are embarassed for having to use some sort of welfare are usually those who will not be on that welfare for very long. They have pride and dignity.
The others have no pride or dignity and therefore, don't care what others think about them. They will get everything they can for free because they think others who fund the welfare system owe them something. They are usually very ignorant as to who it is that funds their welfare because they have listened to the liberals and the media for too long.

I don't mind helping people out but welfare shouldn't be a "lifestyle."
Why should I have to pay for the child of a young unmarried couple?
The "young man" needs to go out and get a job in that case.
When we deport the illegals we'll put the fat lazy bastards on welfare into the fields to pick crops.
The fresh air and excercise will be good for them and they'll lose a ton of weight!

There are times in a person's life when a little help is needed. I too worked multiple jobs at one time. Fortunately there were no children in the house to support or I would have needed help. What I don't understand is the arrogance and judgement put forward to those that do need help. Do you think people ask for help because they want too. Do you think they don't have a sense of pride. You might want to step down from your ivory tower and learn empathy and compassion.

Not all people on welfare and other services there by choice. It does happen that good hard working people run into bad luck or god forbid an accident or death.
Lets not forget that you won't always be 20 years old, old age is another factor and growing cost for medication and inflation. Its hard to keep up...
Edit: Obviously there are lazy and uneducated people who may be abusing the system.
