Aren't they one in the same?

I assume you are speaking of an insane asylum. I would say insane asylum is much lonelier place. I have visited both and couldn't wait to leave them both ASAP but I felt a much stronger impression from the Asylum. I had sympathy for those people who were not only locked up in the asylum but in their own minds. Its very sad. You also realize what a fine line there is between sanity and insanity.

asylum because in jail you are in the cell with other people and in an asylum you are in a padded room

Well, I've been in both. And I would have to say jail is the lonliest place. Atleast with the asylum you have the voices in your head to keep you company. : )

It must be the asylum.... most of the people there feel alienated and have mental conditions that do not allow them to fit in our society... which, by itself, scares most "mentally healthy" people, who end up by alienating them even more... It's a vicious circle and it is difficult to find the way out.

I very much admire nurses and doctors that work with mentally impaired people. It's an incredible job!

having been in both - definitely asylum aka mental ward. it's very scary feeling like you're the only sane person there, including the staff. at least in prison you can have a decent argument with someone.
