Exactly what happened with the Republicans in office, unchecked, for a couple years. They'll be embroiled in scandal throughout, the oldguard Democrats won't be doing enough to fix the problems, the president in office will end up in serious trouble because the DNC will get as lazy and narrow in its candidate selection as the GOP is right now, and there'll be a considerable backlash.
Also, by the time 20 years have passed, it's quite possible another party crisis will come and go, resulting in yet another reversal of the political parties, leaving the Republican party liberal and the Democratic party conservative. It happens every once in a while.
So... twenty years from now, if the DNC rules the US, we'll be just as bad off as we are right now.

Well, if you remember back to when we has a surplus in the treasury, it was with a Dem in charge. It will take the first 4-8 years to clean up after the mess Bush has made, & that will be difficult on most of us, then we will be back on track & things will be MUCH better! I am being VERY optimistic to think it will only take 8 years, but then, democrats in power for 20 years is a fantasy anyway, The republicans will not let us be happy & have money in our pockets, they will want to dominate us & tell then their orders come from God & we can't have any of our own money & it has to be given to the war department....

no person seems to get it Democrat,Republican,or autonomous! that is like those invasive Asian carp in center usa of america swimming up the rivers in the direction of the large Lakes absorbing each and every of the organic components on their way they do no longer care what different species they harm...smacking good human beings around the face on a similar time as driving their boats!! it is going to be an uphill conflict usa of america so get your nets and enable's circulate! maintain OUR BORDERS!

I personally think the country would be a lot better off, although the public does seem to show some inherent wisdom in changing the party in charge every so often, to not get stuck in a rut.
If the Republicans were in charge that long I think we would be far worse off - they have really degenerated into a pack of idiots as of late.

Let's see, the last time we let the Dems run things, we had record surpluses, job creation and peace.
Bush took those, and reversed them.
If we had a full 20 years of Dems, the national debt would be paid for, we'd have every American insured, etc etc.
However, the greedy uber-class would be unhappy because the working class wouldn't be so desperate and easy to exploit.
