I live in philadelphia PA and lately on the news they have been doing a report on a school that has been showing third graders a video about same sex parents and children. Now I don't have a problem with homosexuals or couples of same sex relationships having kids. However I am a little upset that if you were a teacher in the school showing this film that the school would deem it acceptible but if you were that same teacher and you said the Lord's prayer in school you would most likely be severely reprimanded. I want to know why is it more acceptible to accept a persons life styles than it is to accept persons religion.

The two instances you describe are very different.

Showing a video about a homosexual lifestyle simply educates the children.

Saying the Lord's Prayer is part of indoctrinating them.

If you were willing to have the Lord's Prayer recited in a child's classroom, ask yourself if you are also willing to have Muslim, Jewish or (God help us) Wiccan prayers also recited.

School prayer is a very sensitive issue. Particularly to people who are really religious. To them, discontinuing school prayer is like committing a sin. I understand this sentiment but I also understand that to some people change represents fear. Many still argue that School prayer must never be removed, especially since it was practiced for so many years without any debate. So they come up with "Apples V's Oranges" kind of arguments to make this point.

Teaching kids about same-sex parenting is no argument for bringing back school prayer into our classrooms. One has nothing to do with the other.

Our Constitution is an amazing document. It has some very important mechanisms to evolve constantly . We need to understand the beauty of that and have faith in this wonderful tool, which was created to shape our lives now, and in the future.

As stated above, you can't compare apples to oranges, they don't have anything to do with each other. But I will add, that making children aware that there are different types of families and some kids have two moms and some have a mom & a dad and some have two dads. Some people fall in love with a person of opposite gender and some with the same gender and THAT IS OK, is what is needed in our schools! This is what is needed to prevent the hate and harrassment and violence that so many gay teens have to deal with. The schools are doing eduction to prevent violence, why is this so hard to swallow? Unless of course you want to promote violence against gays and lesbians??

You should have posed the question without the religion thing. Let your question stand on it's own or fall. You were making a good point until you dragged the religion thing in. The video and prayer in school are two completely different things. To bad.

They are showing children that it's OK to have two men or two women as parents and that people can be different and that it's OK to be different. They aren't showing two men or two women having sex. It isn't about sex, it's about loving relationships.
I also think that if children, on their own, want to get together for prayer at recess, say grace or meet after lunch, they should be allowed to.
I can't stand the control freaks at both ends of the spectrum.

Saying the Lord's Prayer assumes that everyone is Christian, or should be. Explaining same-gender parents answers questions that kids that age may have about classmates' homes. I would have no problem with teachers explaining how church works, what Hanukkah's about, what the Lord's Prayer is, why some women wear headscarves, etc. But I wouldn't want them leading kids in religious rituals.

Because homosexuality is not a religion.
The US Constitution forbids the state from favoring one religion over any other. It does not forbit teaching children about the realities of modern family life.

Is that so hard to understand?

Because in this country we have religious freedom - which also means freedom FROM religion. YOU cannot impose your religious beliefes in a school setting. However you can traing children about the different kinds of people living in the USA.

Send your child to church if you want them to kmnow about religion. Send them to school to learn about the world - and in this world there are same sex marriages and same sex parents raising children.

accepting "lifestyles" is reality. there are lots of kids with two mommies or two daddies

saying the lord's prayer in school is pushing religion on children(i happen to love the lord's prayer but it is on ME to instill my religious/spiritual values on my child
not the school and non religious people shouldn't be expected to put up with it)
