You can wear a pair of khakie/black colored pants and a nice blue or whites striped or no stripe shirt and a pair of brown, beige or black casual shoe. if you want to top it off with a wool blazer you can.
Try Old Navy or gap for their beige or khakie/black pants. ($20-$30)
get a nice striped or solid oxford shirt ($20)
Shoes you'll have to go to your local stores and try a few on or try Zappos.com and get yourself some clarks, kenneth coles. a nice pair of shoes goes a long way!
and macy's for the ties or burlington coat factory!
And the thrift stores ideas are great, I used to work in an agency that had a thrift store for our adult consumers and trust when I say they get good things, just make it your business to go there twice a week, then when you go again, smile and ask the people that work there if they get a suit, size and color to please give you a call and hold it for you, but continue to come, until you can't wait any longer, then look for a sale.

Do you own a nice sport coat and trousers if so and if the weddings not formal you could wear that with a shirt and tie, otherwise rent a suit like someone else said. Or you can go to good will or Salvation Army thrift store sometimes they have really nice suits for less than the cost of renting and just have it cleaned and pressed.

Wear what you would wear to church or nice clothes for a job. The last time I went to a fancy indoor church wedding, I was amazed at how casual some of the guests were dressed: plaid shirts and sports pants. I would respect the place and event more than that.

Is it an evening wedding? Outdoors? A day time wedding? If its daytime and reception is in a hall, you can wear dockers and a button down shirt. You can wear a tie if you want. My daughters wedding went from afternoon tilll evening. We had men in suits, sport coats and just dockers and button down shirts. Whatever you're comfortable wearing. I wouldn't run out and buy a suit if your never going to wear it again.

You could buy a nice suit at a consignment shop for 1/3 of the price or borrow one from a friend.
But, justa pair of nice slacks, a dress shirt and a tie should do. Maybe a blazer, depending on the weather.

If you wanna do it on the cheap, hit a thrift store or consignment shop and get a pair of Dockers and a nice blazer, then head to a regular store and get a plain white button down shirt and a tie.

Another option for you is to find a suit at a second-hand or thrift store. They can be purchased for very little money- it might make sense, especially if you hardly ever need to wear a suit.

Most places that rent tuxedos also rent out suits. Just go to a place that rents out suits and tuxedos. That way you just pay a small price to rent a suit.
