I really had a *bad* time with The Cormorant, by Stephen Gregory. The Shining, by Stephen King, which has been mentioned before, and The Exorcist, by William Peter Blatty, are also great classics. For a great gothic tale, try either The turn of the screw, by Henry James or any anthology of M.R. James' (not related) ghost stories. Any of those has kept me awake!
Also, you may want to check out the works of H.P. Lovecraft, which are full of Things That Shall Be Not Named, alien horrors and prohibition era flair.

I don't know how old you are, but when my younger sister was in junior high school too many years ago, she started reading Salem's Lot by Stephen King and never finished the book(until she was almost 40). Wouldn't be in the house alone unless the doors were all locked, the curtains were shut and all of the lights were on. I didn't think the same way. I just thought it was a good book.

Helter Skelter is not freak you out scary, but it does make you realize that there are some twisted people in this world. It bugged me. But there is this book by Dean Koontz about a woman who meets this guy at a winery and then has him show up at her door. It seriously bugged me and the title is a blank to me. Another Dean Koontz novel about a psychiatrist will freak you out. Again, title a blur. Go to the local library, look up Koontz, and search the backs of books. They may sound slight, but he's famous for a reason.

When I was a kid, Stephen King's short story "The Boogeyman" scared me so bad that I would sleep with a chain on my closet door. Twenty years later, I still won't reread it as an adult because I am afraid it will really scare me again.
Another really scary book is Bethany's Sin by Robert R. McCammon. It's not as scary as The Boogeyman, but it caught my attention.

Any story or book that is written to sound like historical fiction. Montague Rhodes James (M.R. James) is the master of this, but he's long gone. Look for his short story "Oh, Whistle & I'll Come to You, My Lad" -- there is a collection of his available at amazon.com, with many of his sleepless night kind of stories.
