There are six sets of answers, one for each interpretation of your question:
1. (1/2)Y - 11 = (1/6)Y
This gives Y=33
2. 1/(2Y) - 11 = 1/(6Y)
This gives Y=1/33
3. (1/2)Y - 11 = 1/(6Y)
This gives Y=11 plus or minus (2/3)root273
4. 1/(2Y) - 11 = (1/6)Y
This gives Y=-33 plus or minus 2root273
5. 1/(2Y - 11) = (1/6)Y
This gives Y= -1/2 or 6
6. 1/(2Y - 11) = 1/(6Y)
This gives Y=-11/4
Please write out your equations more accurately, there could easily be equations which have many different combinations of interpretations, which as you can see give very different solutions. Adding in a few brackets makes it much easier to understand. It does actually matter where the Y's are

1/2y - 11 = 1/6 y rearrange for y
1/2y - 1/6y = 11
y/2 - y/6 = 11
common denominator = 6
(3y - y) / 6 = 11
3y - y = 11 x 6 = 66
2y = 66
y = 66 / 2 = 33
y = 33

1/(2Y-11) = 1/(6Y)
2Y-11 = 6Y
-11 = 4Y
Y = -11/4
Y = -2 3/4
(1/2Y) - 11 = (1/6Y)
Multiply both sides by 6Y:
3 - 66Y = 1
2 = 66Y
Y = 1/33

1/2Y-11=1/6Y
multiply by 6 to get rid of fractions
6/2Y-66=6/6Y
3Y-66=Y
3Y-Y=66
2Y=66
Y=33

If you start by multiplying through by 6.
You get : 3y - 66 = y
Subtract y from both sides
2y - 66 = 0
Add 66 to both sides
2y = 66
Divide by 2
y = 33
There you go. Its simple when you know how!!!!

This is so easy I can't believe it's a college level question. Anyone with GCSE maths should be able to solve it.
Y/2 - 11 = Y/6
3Y/6 - 11 =Y/6
3Y/6 -Y/6 = 11
2Y/6 = 11
2Y = 66
Y = 33
