a w-2 can't show losses, it can only show wages paid to him. If by work on the side, you mean he files a schedule C as a proprietorship, if he's losing money there, don't even claim it.

as to his ex - i she filing her 1040 as a head of household? or is she doing her w-4 as a head of household? If she's filing her actual 1040 tax return as a head of heousehold, she's throwing away money. Married Joint is the cheapest tax bracket. If it's her w-4 that she's claiming Single-head of household, that's fine. That just determines how much taxes to withhold and support is based on gross pay, not net. and has nothing to do with tax return filing status. If anything, she's just making sure she gets enough taxes withheld, and is probably expecting a refund

Child Support orders cannot be changed without going to court. Most states do not care where you get the money as long as the support is paid. Having paperwork that shows he worked and lost money will not impress a judge. It may even work against him.

depending on what state and county he lives in his support can go up with arrears from the time of the original filing his ex being married or how she files has nothing to do with support
