The moon does not make any light of its own, it merely reflects light from the sun. During its orbit around the earth, it is in the daytime sky during roughly half of the time, and in the night sky roughly half the time.
The moon is so close to us that the reflected light from the sun is not masked by the diffracted sunlight of our atmosphere. Ergo -- you can see the moon during the day. Simple.

Because the Moon is in the sky, day or night, roughly 12 hours out of every 24. It moves a bit from day to day relative to the Sun as it orbits around the Earth. It's usually visible in the afternoon around First Quarter and in the morning around Third Quarter. I'm surprised you never noticed it before; it's there an awful lot of the time!

This is because the moon orbits the earth every 29.5 days so. You can see it when the sun is up sometimes, you just need to know where to look, because its not so obvious during the day (because the glare of the sun diminishes its brightness) as at night.

if the moon is in the right location, sunlight will reflect off its surface and penetrate the atmosphere and strike your retina. Thats all it takes to see the moon. Its just easier at night because theres less "noise" from the atmosphere(noise being actually light which is emitted by the gases). Since the amount of light coming from the moon, pales in comparison to the amount of light typically generated by the atmosphere from absorbsion of sunlight, you normally wont see it. But its always there.

If it's brighter than the blue sky around it, you will see it.
At its brightest you can see Venus during the day too.
