I had an IV twice during my last pregnancy. In the early stages I had TERRIBLE morning sickness and couldn't even keep down water! I went in because I was concerned I was dehydrated...and I was. So I spent the afternoon getting IV fluids.
I also had an IV during labor and delivery. (I think most women do)
As far as whether or not an IV is SAFE for a pregnant woman, that all depends on what's in the IV bag! If the hospital staff knows you are pregnant, they wouldn't give you any medications that could harm your baby (unless maybe it was a life or death situation)

What kind of IV? If it's for fluids it fine. I was in the hospital at least 15 times. I had morning sickness all the way through along with low blood sugar. I would pass out a lot and was always dehydrated. They gave me lots of IV's to get me hydrated again. It shouldn't cause any harm.

What kind of IV? I went in to the ER for morning sickness where they gave me an IV for fluids. In this case, it is better than having to take in liquids orally because you are for sure going to be well hydrated. Only side effect I got was wanting to pee when I was fully hydrated again.

I was admitted on a Sunday night and they put one IV in immediately. It worked throughout my stay...I think they removed it Tuesday morning (I had a c-section Monday night). No major side effects, maybe a little tiny bit of pain at the injection site. Not a big deal.

In a normal pregnancy there should not be any IVs unless it is the hospitals policy to give you one to keep u hydreted or pain killers. I never had to have an IV except for my first when i had group b streap. My second i had none, and my third i had one to keep me hydrated because i was'nt dring enough fluids. never had pain killers

I had an IV put in right before I had my child. I had a C section. It didn't hurt that much. I think they took it out the next day, can't remember exactly. I don't think there's any side effects.

not every laboring woman will need an IV, but many do. If you have a prolonged labor they will give you an IV to keep you hydrated, as well as give you meds that you may need or want. If you have an easy, unmedicated labor than you may request to not have an IV.
