I have a 1999 T reg Ford Focus 1.8 petrol (69000 miles) and wondered if on a 250 mile motorway run I should use up any engine oil and if so roughly how much (in ml)?
On these engines (Zetec E), by how much could you overfill the engine before it would cause damage e.g. the crankshaft whipping up the oil?

You shouldn't over fill it at all, and 250 miles is nothing you shouldn't even notice the difference in level.

69k aint a lot for a zetec-e, is it using loads?

i think fords judgement on older engine such as this (17 year old design) is around 0.5 litres per 1000 miles, thats what i was told with a 75k 1.6 zetec-e

on a 250 run i'd just fill it to the line on the dipstick and then check it after 100 miles then again at the end of the journey, carry some oil in your car. (5w 40 on a zetec)

personally i dont like to overfill. why would you want to?

Don't overfill your tank - check the dipstick - it should be halfway - you most likely to need a low octane oil being a Ford - Your engine should easily cope with that on the journey - but check your water too

good travelling!

You shouldn't use any oil. If you are losing oil, then you either have a leaking seal, or gasket, or your engine is burning the oil due to worn rings or valve seals. You shouldn't have to overfill the oil level at all.

good luck.

You should never be more then 1/2 quart over. As far as using oil, 1 quart every 1000 miles is considered normal by many manufacturers.

You shouldn't be using any oil up at all on journeys like that! I wouldn't overfill either, go by the max on the dipstick.
