Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. You may want to check all the connections between the dash and the fuel sender in the tank. It is still possible that the fuel sender itself is bad.

To be sure you will have to make sure the wiring is good first. All you have to do is disconnect the fuel level wire going into the tank, usually a pink one, turn the ignition on and check the guage reading. It should go way over full. If the gas gauge is always way over full, it is an indication that there is an open circuit somewhere. If it does this, ground the pink wire where it goes back to the dash and re-check the gas guage reading. It should be at empty now. If that is all good, the problem is the tank unit itself or a baffle has come over and is holding the float up. You will have to remove the tank and inspect. A lot of times we had to reshape one of the baffles as there was a lump on it that would hold up the float.

there should be a censor for the fuel gage in the tank...this is a very rigorous task to drop the tank and all to just get that one little problem.. but u may not need to replace your gage. the cable that turns it (it being a 85 is most likely cable driven not electrical) may be shot. this is also a Farly hard task. but is it always at full. or does it move at different times ... if it moves. it may just be off set.. like when ur empty its at half and when ur full its well over full...good luck. if it comes don to it.. throw 20 bucks at it with a junk yard fuel gage.. should be able to find one Farly easy

You need to replace the fuel gage if it is not reading right or it could be something with your tank.
