I have a younger friend who would like to start and she is wondering how you should ride if she wanted to do English style... and is it very hard to learn or do you catch on?

English is very to catch on with! With lessons she will do fine. She could also get some books to read on English riding. They will have diagrams of how one sits on an english saddle.

The problematic bit to explain is the heel of your foot. It should be in the right position. I have not enough experience to guide you, but I know there are a lot of websites for horse lovers.
Google on something like: riding sitting position uk.
The uk is likely to get you UK sites, so the instructions will be for English style riding.

I have had a week holiday course when I first started riding, and after a week my instructors told me that, while I had to learn a lot, the beginnings were there. And that most of their students did have the basics after a week. (That is 4 hours of riding a day.)

Upright and straight backed. Any horseback riding is easy to do. You just sit on the saddle provided with your feet in the stirrups.
