My niece who is seven months pregnant went into labor last night. When she went to the hospital they had her fill out paperwork and didn't even check on her until two hours later. When they finally did they sent her to another hospital(apparently they don't have a maternity ward). When she got there they couldn't find a heartbeat. They didn't do anything but try again to find a heartbeat. Now they tell her they are going to induce labor and she needs to make arrangments for a funeral. Should they have not checked her sooner? This makes me sooo angry, what can we do?

There is a hospital near me that doesn't have a maternity ward; they should have advised her to go to another hospital right away (happened to me). They never should have made her wait 2 hours. Please have an autopsy done, to see if this could have been prevented or to see if labor was because the baby was already still-born.

Its hard to say without being there. As in any ER, there could have been what they judged to be far more emergency situations. Or there might not have been. And the first thing to consider is why that hospital was chosen, when there wasnt a maternity war. Sounds like what you first need to do is document the chain of events for an appropriate review.

The first hospital should have checked on this. Ive never heard of a hospital that doesnt have a maternity ward. They should have been able to help. You may have her contact a lawyer on this especially if the baby did die.

It sounds like they should have checked her right away since she was preterm. But if she were full-term or close to full-term, they realize that labor usually takes a long time so that's probably why they didn't check her out right away. Did they know she was only 7 months? I'm assuming they did, so it sounds quite negligent to me.

Yes, they absolutely should have checked her as soon as she got there. Is she young or on state insurance, this is how young girls with state aid are often treated and it is terrible. Has she talked to her regular OB doctor? I would not let them induce her until they confirmed with an ultra sound that the baby is not alive. It sounds barbaric to me. I am sorry and hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

its likely that the preterm labor was casued by the death of the baby, not vise versa. I am sorry for her loss.
