Introduction
The cause and function of hiccups has baffled medical practitioners since the days of Hippocrates. Although no one has figured out the exact science behind these "abrupt diaphragmatic contractions," we have come up with a few home remedies that might be able to help.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps
1Step OneSwallow 1 tsp. white table sugar, dry. A study found that this stopped hiccups immediately in 19 out of 20 people. Repeat up to 3 more times at 2-minute intervals if necessary.
2Step TwoGulp down a glass of water if the sugar doesn't work.
3Step ThreeSlowly eat a piece of dry bread.
4Step FourBreathe in and out of a paper bag. Do not use a plastic bag under any circumstances, and don't do this longer than 1 minute.
5Step FiveGargle with water (see 'How to Gargle').
6Step SixRepeat the above steps until your hiccups stop.
Tips & Warnings
Keep in mind that hiccups can be caused by eating too fast and subsequently swallowing a lot of air.
Drinking too much alcohol can also be the cause.
See a doctor if you have severe pain, if your hiccups last longer than a day (or 3 hours in the case of a small child), or if they started after you took a prescription medication.

The key to getting rid of hiccups is to divert your attention to something other than them. This is why scaring the sh*t out of someone with hiccups usually works. OR if you're trying to get rid of them yourself my stepdaddy taught me this trick that works EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Picture a long, long, long brick wall.
It's painted white with purple circles.
There are ten bald man standing against it.
Each man is wearing a grey suit.
They all have pink striped ties.
The first two men turn and face each other.
Then the second two.
Then the third two.
The fourth.
The fifth.
Now have them shake hands and smile.
Bet, you won't get that far before the hiccups are gone. Try it, next time. It's actually kind of fun! Here, have a star! :)

I have found that If i try to hiccup while i have the hiccups, then my body won't let me. If that doesn't work, I used to hold my breath for 20 sec. and then immediately swallow 3 times without exhaling.

drink water with your head sideways (like from a water fountain or with a straw) and plug your nose then hold the water in your mouth with your nose still plugged for 10 "Mississippis" then swallow. That always works for me, or try doing something that takes a ton of concentration. When your mind is off your hiccups then they usually go away.

I hold my breath and drink water until i cant hold it anymore. Hiccup goes off. If u see someone else having it, try to shock that person out of nowhere.. Such sudden shock would make the hiccup go away immediately.. But of course, dont shock them to their death..
Cheers!

My son had them once while we were waiting to pick my sister up. My daughter told him to get out of the car & walk around it. As he was making his second lap she beeped the horn & it scared the hiccups right out of him. It was also really funny for the rest of us because we didn't know what she was going to do until she did it.

I am lucky, I don't really get the hiccups. Usually I just get 1 then that's it, they are over.

Drink 20 drinks of water while holding my breath. Sometimes I eat sugar to. But drinking the water helps more.

delete the word hiccups from your question.
there you go, now no more hiccups, only
"what do you do to get rid of?"
sounds weird, just like hiccups

People think it's a joke, but this works every time. Just try it. Put a fork(or a knife or spoon) crosswise between your teeth, like a dog carries a bone. Quickly gulp down a glass of water. Gauranteed results!!!
