And, the people/way of life that worked the land -- like cowboys/cowboy hats, lasso's, steer horns for the American west as symbols for its individualism.

National symbols obviously are a remembrance of any given country, kind of like a name brand's icon or a school's mascot. In my opinion, national symbols foster patriotism in citizens, or at least should if the citizen cares for his country. (On the other hand, certain national symbols can cause people to abhor a country even more.)

For example, when I think of Coca-cola, I think of the polar bear, the coca-cola classic song, the text, glass bottles, and commercials. Similarly, when I think of the United States, I think of Lady Liberty, "The Star Spangled Banner", Mount Rushmore, the Declaration of Independence, and more. Each of these items represents my country in my mind. And it makes me well with pride to think of them.

National symbols are part of a shared history and experience. Think of your family and friends - are there objects, drawings, songs, etc that evoke strong emotions and feelings of togetherness? It is the same with national symbols, they evoke our feelings of community.
