And before someone asks me if I would want my daughter, sister, etc. to be a prostitute, let me point out that there are many legal professions I wouldn't want them to be. Pornstar, or stripper for example.
Do you think it would be safer if it were legal, regulated and taxed?
And please, no answers based on religion. I'm not asking if it's moral, I'm asking if it should be legal.
Thanks.

I'm not too sure about it. i think there are more pros than cons. however, i wouldn't feel comfortable if my brother or dad could visit prostitutes because it is okay to do so. Great reasons to legalized prostitution are:

The government could collect taxes on it.
It could turn into a health regulated industry and cut down on the transmission of STDs.
It would cut down on rape.
Prostitutes wouldn't have to live in fear of their pimps.
Police could spend their time arresting real criminals, instead of incarcerating some lonely guy who is looking for company.
Safer to legalize it than not.i mean come on, whether legal or not, people who visit prostitutes will continue to do so. therefore it is better to legalize it because underaged people could be caught.

Cons:
Everyone might do that because it's legal and i feel sick thinking about it.
Families will be torn apart.

I support legal, regulated prostitution 100% because I am against any government involvement in regulating the behavior of adults in activities where no one is harmed. The drugs and slavery associated with prostitution have nothing to do with the act itself and has everything to do with the fact that it's currently illegal. Those who oppose it (i.e. think it spreads disease) don't really understand it (i.e. prostitutes are safer than a one night stand).

Would I want my daughter to be a prostitute? I would rather she were a well-paid prostitute than an exploited worker making $20/day at some chicken processing plant.

I do not think it should be legalized- it would lead young girls down the wrong path, just like stripping and pornstars do. Most of the time, these professions lead to prostitution anyway. You are probably right, it would probably be safer if it were regualted and given guidelines to follow, but to legalize it would be to accept it as a profession, so I still say no.

I have mixed feeling about that really

hmmmmmmmmm

I think anytime sex is separated from love, its very sad and causes harm.

I also think we should at least like the people we sleep with.

Sleeping with people you don't like only causes harm.
Even if you get a few nice shivers for a few minutes or whatever.

legal or not, when people have money and want sex, and other people need money and are willing to give it, the we have prostitution

soooooooooo, maybe the best question is how to deal with it in society, free clinics and councelling for hookers maybe, free condoms,

the worst thing about it is the example it sets for kids and how it can emotionally bankrupt someone, also AIDS and other STDs is a very real risk

It is "the oldest profession" apparently, but I do agree that it would be in everyone's best interest if was legal, regulated, taxed, and ALSO those individuals who work be put through routine medical exams, and be taught safe sex practices.

As far as I can tell, there are no valid arguments for it to be illegal outside of morals - not that morality is a valid argument for legislation.

There is no victim, it doesn't harm anyone, the only reason that it's associated with other criminal acts is because it is illegal.

I'd vote to legalize it.

Defiantly not! Prostitution is just a very high risk of spreading STD's, something that is very deadly, obviously you don't know what those are if you think that prostitution should be legal.

The criminalization of prostitution corresponds directly with women's suffrage.
