Someone told you a fish story. The gas tanks have floats in them, sometimes they go bad & stop working. I have a 99 taurus, so I am not just picking on ford, but they did have a bunch of low cost parts. Mine is nickle & diming me to death now!
You have to drop the tank & see what is wrong. If you don't want to do that, or pay for it, keep track of your mileage & that can be your gas gauge. I do that on a regular basis, & always have, just in case! I have a book & write in it the mileage & how many gallons. If my consumption goes up, I look for reasons why. Good luck!

The fuel guage circuit consists of a fuel tank sending unit, a voltage regulator called a CVR and a calibrated gauge.
The most likely failure point is either the fuel sending unit, located in the tank, or the CVR located behind the instrument cluster. The circuits should be tested and then a diagnoses made as to which part failed.
I have never heard of a switch other than the roll-over switch which would never affect the guage reading.

There is no magic switch on your car. You have a problem with wiring, or the sending unit. If you aren't familiar with electrical repair take the car in to an auto electric repair shop. Also try to have an almost empty gas tank when you do, just in case they need to pull the tank.

good luck.

You will need to change the fuel sender that is located in the fuel tank.
