I am trying to look for a decent beach to have a BBQ, particullary somewhere with cliffs or places we can BBQ away from the sand. I want to be close enough to the beach to swim but a little bit away from the sand so our food doesn't get sandy. I was thinking Windansea because they have cliffs with little sand but I don't like that beach...the waves get way to crazy for me. So if you can suggest a beach that would be great!

La Jolla Shores is a beach you should check out. There is a park next to the beach that many people bbq and hang out at. I always see people with canopies and big bbq's in that park.

In Downtown La Jolla there is Scripps Park right along Coast Blvd that people also bbq and hang out at. There are a couple of small beaches right next to the park that are good for swimming and there are also good snorkeling spots. Also I think there are tables and bbq's at this site to use.

In Del Mar there are two small parks at Coast Blvd and 15th street that is also a good spot to bbq at and is right above the sand on a bluff.

In Pacific Beach there is Palisades Park right above the sand on a bluff at the end of Law St on Coast Blvd.

The following is a link that shows you those 4 places on a map, the spots should be in the left pane to click on: http://maps.live.com/?v=2&cid=7607F3A8BEA791A6!106&encType=1

There are many of passions to follow in San Diego and that hotelbye is the spot to start discovers what San Diego has to offer. In the San Diego holiday you will step external of your comfort zone and you'll examine new activities while you are here and you could just discover that discovering a fresh pursuit is an experience in itself. Among the places must see from San Diego is Balboa Park. That park has over a 1400 acre and here you will find old buildings, numerous museums, gardens, and natural space. The park was made for the Panama California Exhibition of 1915-1916. The commonplace architecture is Spanish-Mexican type, minimal level structures that blend in with the organic surroundings. One of the shows of the park are the Botanical Gardens and lily pool, the Museum of Man, the Museum of Natural History, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the famous San Diego Zoo. Even though you never get into a making the park is just an attractive place.

You want a beach without sand??????? Am I missing something here?

I've BBQed at the beach lots of times; never a problem with sand in food. Just don't BBQ if there's a wind and you should do fine.

The only places I can think of are either Mission Beach or La Jolla Shores.

Mission Beach is nice BUT it's dirty sometimes and it's a haven for homeless people and other ne'er-do-wells.

La Jolla is a nicer beach, cleaner, and there aren't a whole lot of rip currents.

La Jolla beaches are very clean and nice. Check out the needapedia article on la jolla cove. It has some excellent pictures of the area.

Coronado. There's the "sea" side and the "bay" side. I'm not sure about the sea side, but the bay side actually has permanent gazebos with tables & concrete pads and BBQ areas...and I'm betting the sea side has this as well.

We used to BBQ there in the summer when I was young and it was great.
