Official photo I.D. (Drivers License) and certified copy of birth certificate (to prove citizenship).

If you are hauling your household goods and belongings with you for the move, you need to have a manifest (list of items) to show customs.

Tip: Drive through the U.S. as much of the way as possible, gas is considerably cheaper on the U.S. side of the border.

If you are driving through Canada, all you will need is proof of US citizenship. A birth certificate, voter's registration card, passport. With the first two you may need a picture ID to verify they are yours. If you travel by air or sea, you NEED to have a US Passport or proof that you have applied for one. I had a friend who flew from Texas to California and drove to Alaska and he didn't have any problems.

When I did it all I needed was photo id. Actually when re-entering the lower 48 in Montana, they didn't even check mine, just the drivers...this was however, pre 9/11
