5,000 acres = 2178 x 10^4 ft ²
If this is contained within a square, the length of each side is given by:-
√2178 x 10² ft
4670 ft
Length of side of square = 4670 ft
PS
1 mile = 5280 ft

And I have no idea of a foot-ball pitch! 5000 acres will be 500 square furlongs and that means say 20 x 25 furlongs. Remember that a furlong is 220 yards and 8 furlongs will make a mile. Approximately 5 furlongs will make a kilometer and thus we are talking of 4 kilometer by 5 kilometer rectangle.
I hope you got a better idea of the magnitude.

Say a football (soccer) pitch is about (100 m x 64 m) = 6400 square meters, give or take. One acre = 4,046.85642 square meters. So, a single acre is about 2/3 the size of a football field. 5000 acres = 20,234,282 square meters. 20,234,282/ 4046.85462= ~3161 football fields.

A football pitch is 100 x 50 yards --- http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/rules_and_equipment/4200666.stm
or 5000 square yards
5000 acres = 24200000 square yards
You could put 24200 000 / 5000 = 4840 football picthes in 5,000 acres
