A CPU is the core part of a computer. IT does the processing of adata, namely binay data . The computer understands only voltages and volages are used to represent 1 and 0,We do all things from a simple click to palying games or waht not, using these 0's n 1's,Except that since it is messey to have a bunch of 0,s n 1's we have designed whet we call Operating systems, with lots of underneath stuff, that convert the 0's n 1's to a human understandable, and now a days Graphical form,To process these at the system core, still 1's n 0's ar used. It is the CPU, that does this calulations. Adiition and functions like XOr are done to get results. CPU consts of the arithmetic prcessing unit and all other stuff to get these things done!!
That's what CPU is.
In short, if u open the cabinet of a system; benethe a big (small now-a-days) fan you find a chip that is removable: we call it the Processor! You can call it the CPU.

We use the CPU, or Central Processing Unit, as the heartbeat of our computer. It processes information but also serves as your "everything" with a computer. It is a somewhat outdated term but in the old days (aka 90's) it was a reference to actual computer.

CPU interprets computer program instructions and processes data. CPUs provide the fundamental digital computer trait of programmability, and are one of the necessary components found in computers of any era, along with primary storage and input/output facilities

Erm, to process data centrally in a computer.

Without it NOTHING in a PC works.

Kinda like how well your body would work with brain removed . . . although having reread your question, I could be wrong on the point of a body non functioning without a brain present !
