While watching the sky last night(9/3/07) I saw what appeared to be a photo flash from space. My wife also observed it.

Quit possibly was a head-on meteor, which normally burn up at a height of 100km or so. These are visible from th ground, but very rarely happen until after midnight.

Moe likely it was the sun's reflection on a satelite such as an iridium flash which look like this

It's possible that you saw a head on meteor, but not likely. They usually enter Earth's atmosphere at an oblique angle.

What you probably saw was a satellite, asteroid, or some other object that momentarily was at an angle such that it reflected light directly in your direction.

It would look like an unmoving spot of light that would disappear in a few seconds.
It could flare up as it disintegrated.

a stationary light of short duration - same duration as a shooting star
