I was just listening to the radio and there are A LOT of songs with questionable lyrics, but I am using this one as an example.
Coffee Shop by Young Joc.
The lyrics are about a drug dealer and making drugs and selling drugs.
There are CHILDREN singing the chorus.
WHO THE HELL has kids singing a song about drugs.
I know if it ticks me off turn the channel, but gesh, when is enough enough? There are little kids whose parents dont give a damn and they repeat this stuff or try to live by what they hear on tv and in music. SAD.
What can we do as a society to make sure people can have free speech but that it does not hurt us a whole, bringing us all down.

I understand dont buy it or turn the channel people, what I don't understand is why children are allowed to sing it.
There are groups that watch out for stuff like that but I am thinking the free speech thing has something to do with why it wasn't stopped.
I get sick of hearing how our society is going down hill and that free speech reigns.
YES HAVE FREE SPEECH, but goodness be ready to face the consiquences OF the free speech.
Yell fire in a crowded theatre and see what happens... sure you are allowed to say it... but......... just do it once and find out.

You can never go too far, as far as free speech is concerned. What you say can be questionable or objectionable, but it will almost always be protected under the first ammendment. The only things that aren't protected are the ones that put people in danger, such as yelling "FIRE!" in an enclosed area. But other than those few exceptions, free speech is exactly that- freedom to say whatever you wish, at the risk of offending some people. As someone once said, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it."

First, there are limits on free speech. Speech which is immanently dangerous (yelling "fire" in a movie theater), deemed harmful to society (swearing on public air-waves), or which is a deliberate lie for personal gain (slander, truth in advertising).
Second, one price of free speech is that you WILL be offended. However, you have to realize that some people are offended by what you have to say. You have to consider that if we begin restricting what others have to say, there may come a day when you are also restricted.
If you are offended, change the radio station, contact the station and tell them you have stopped listening, contact the sponsors and tell them what is being played 'in their names'. But, trying to make a law which says we cannot play songs that reference illegal activity is a prime example of the slippery slope.

The only advice I can offer in that area is to try to encourage others to turn it off. Promote the positive speech options that are out there through your gift giving. Give gifts of music and books that promote the good and the positive and you will have done your part in promoting your great cause. In response to the actual question:
Too far is too far when we do nothing about it.

I read the lyrics, and while it may be tasteless to have children sing it, its still free speech. Just as they have the right to release the song, you have a right to not buy it or listen to it.

You really hit a sore spot here with me.
If you look in the Constitution, there are NO attatched conditions, to freedom of speech AT ALL! NOBODY is forcing ANYONE to listen to ANY form of music. If you don't like it-DON'T LISTEN TO IT! But NO ONE has the right to tell us what kind of music that we can or can't listen to OR write! To do so is compleatly UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
Listen to ICE T's "Freedom of Spech"!

Free speech means you can say what you think about it, too....and then change the radio station. I don't listen to things I don't like, why do other people feel the need to?

I entirely agree with you. I'm not really sure what can be done, but things need to be cleaned up a bit. Public radio needs to be cleaner and parents need to concentrate on parenting more.

"Free speech" is FREE SPEECH.
People are constantly trying to define and redefine what is 'acceptable' and what is 'too far.'
You're practicing free speech here by whining about someone else exercising the very same right, and you'll keep doing so until someone tries to censor your speech.
If you don't like someone's music lyrics, DON'T LISTEN TO THEM.
